The only pain to biomass is not having a readout of +/- of the resource and needing to keep an eye on it so you are producing enough for the demand. If, at any point, you want to see how many materials you have, just open up the building. Fortunately, keeping track of your resource is mostly a passive activity. Tbh, cultivators are a better source for carbonium and ironium then fabricators, if you have the plants for them scanned, while also adding a bunch of power to your HQ and outposts as well. These drops are resources which can be obtained by killing enemies or destroying the flora. Also, those cultivators will make all the various different metals from plants I've scanned, on top of the fabricators supply, and I am swimming is resources without having to deal with new temporary mines over and over.

Ironium synthesizers also generate rhodonite at the same rate. Carbonium mines also generate hazenite at the same rate. Then I use the biomass at my HQ/outposts, in biomass powerplants. Since acquiring the side resources (hazenite, tanzanite, rhodonite, ferdonite) have always been a bit of a pain in the past to acquire, I thought I'd add their resource generation to basic mining and synthesisers. I find it more convenient to just put a bunch of cultivators and harvesters in another flora zone, generally the cobalt zone, and create a ton of biomass. Having to build new mines over and over, to get 10-20k of the resource from the ground, becomes tedious after you have researched different synergies.

I prefer to have fabricators, instead of mines, once I have the ability to power them.
